Foreigners moving to or living in Torrevieja frequently need insurance cover across three areas: their vehicle, their home, and their health. Spanish insurance requirements differ from those in the UK, Germany and other countries — and some cover becomes mandatory the moment you register as a resident.
Third-party car insurance is legally mandatory in Spain for any vehicle used on public roads. Once you establish Spanish residency and re-register your foreign vehicle with Spanish plates, your existing non-Spanish policy almost certainly becomes invalid.
| Cover level | What it covers | Typical annual cost |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party only (terceros) | Damage/injury you cause to others. Legal minimum. | €200–400/yr |
| Third-party + fire & theft | As above plus your car if stolen or damaged by fire. | €300–500/yr |
| Fully comprehensive (todo riesgo) | All of the above plus accidental damage, breakdown, legal defence. | €400–900/yr |
Buildings insurance is required by your lender if you have a mortgage. Even without a mortgage, both buildings and contents insurance are strongly recommended — water damage from burst pipes, neighbour floods, or coastal storms is common and costly.
If you are renting, consider contents insurance — the landlord's policy does not cover your belongings. For holiday homes vacant for extended periods, check whether your policy lapses after 30–60 days vacancy; you may need a specific unoccupied property policy.
Private health insurance is optional for most residents but valuable for: Non-Lucrative Visa applicants (it's a legal requirement), those wanting faster specialist access, English-speaking consultants, and dental cover.
